Information trouvée : Dr. Ettinger, who also taught writing at MIT, died March 12, 2005, at her home in
Cambridge, Masssachusetts, at the age of 80. Elzbieta Ettinger was a novelist and
biographer who learned English in an underground school in the Warsaw ghetto and was
not published until she arrived in the United States in middle age. She earned a bachelor's
degree at the University of Krakow and worked in the Polish Ministry of Export after
the war. She was also an interpreter for the Polish government and traveled to Cambodia,
Laos, and Vietnam in that role in 1954. After earning a doctorate in American literature
at Warsaw University in 1966, she immigrated to the United States the following year
with the help of a professor at Harvard University. She taught at the Harvard Extension
School before joining the faculty at MIT, where she taught from 1975 until her retirement
in 1996
