camp for Japanese-Americans as an infant during World War II and went on to serve
26 years in Congress, has died of complications from a rare disease, his family said
Sunday (02-01-2005]. Matsui, 63, died Saturday night at the National Naval Medical
Center in this Washington suburb. He was born in Sacramento in September 1941 to a
Japanese-American family, and a few months later, after the Japanese attack on Pearl
Harbor, he and his family were sent to an internee camp to sit out World War II. Matsui
opened a private law practice in Sacramento in 1967 and won a seat on the City Council
in 1971.
