Information trouvée : décès 2004 : Frederica de Laguna, a leading early ethnologist and archaeologist and expert on Alaska native peoples, died of heart failure Oct. 6 at home in Bryn Mawr, three days after her 98th birthday.Fellow anthropologists, to whom she was known as "Freddy," say her death is the end of a pioneering era. In 1975, Dr. de Laguna and Margaret Mead became the first women to win election to the National Academy of Sciences. She later served as its president and also was president of the American Anthropological Association...Her first job was as a field director for the University Museum at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1938, she began teaching anthropology at Bryn Mawr, a position she held until retiring in 1975 as professor emeritus. In retirement, she continued to write and lecture at several major universities. Dr. de Laguna took a break from her academic career during World War II to serve as a lieutenant commander in the Navy Waves...In between her scholarly works, she wrote two pulpy mysteries for Doubleday. Fog on the Mountain, a murder mystery solved by a visiting anthropologist, was republished in the 1990s. She also wrote The Arrow Points to Murder, a detective story set in a museum.
