Professeur de la littérature anglaise à la Purdue university, Indiana, USA (en 1984). "He is emeritus professor of english and comparative literature at Purdue University. He has written widely on the topic of American Fiction and romanticism, including books and articles on the relation of the romance to the realist tradition, the gothic fiction of Edgar Poe, the short stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the travel narratives of Herman Melville. The former editor of the journal "Poe Studies and ESQ : a journal of the american renaissance", he is also the editor of various volumes, including the Northon critical editions of the selected writings of Edgar Poe. He is co-editor of A companion to american fiction 1865-1914". ( en 2012)
