Career: served in the Second World War 1939-45; ; entered His Majesty's Foreign Service, 1946, served until 1957, in the Foreign Office, UK Delegation to the United Nations (New York), Cabinet Office (Private Secretary to the Secretary of the Cabinet), and Vienna; Secretary, first Conference of Privy Councillors on Security, 1955; Conservative MP for Moray & Nairn, 1959-Feb. 1974; Assistant Government Whip, 1961-62; a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury and Scottish Whip, 1962-63; Joint Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Scottish Office, 1963-64; Opposition Spokesman on Defence and Scottish Affairs, 1966-70; Secretary of State for Scotland, 1970-74; Vice-President, Parliamentary Maritime Group, from 1986; Oil Industry Consultant, 1975-95; Director 1983-91, Alliance & Leicester (formerly Alliance) Building Society; Chairman, Stoic Financial Services, 1979-93; Vice-President of the Advisory Committee on Pollution of the Sea; 1980; Deputy Lieutenant for Nairn from 1985; Vice-Lord Lieutenant of the Highland Region (Nairn), 1988-99, &c.He was raised to the peerage, 1974, as Baron Campbell of Croy, of Croy in the County of Nairn.
