13 avril 1873 : à la suite d'une contestation de l'élection du gouverneur de Louisiane en 1872, des membres d'une organisation paramilitaire blanche font feu sur une foule de Noirs venus défendre le palais de justice de Colfax ; d'autres Noirs furent abattus après leur arrestation (3 Blancs et 150 Noirs tués)
