Janvier-octobre 1949 : procès de 11 dirigeants du Parti communiste américain (dont le secrétaire général Eugene Dennis) pour violation du Smith Act de 1940 (réprimant les tentatives de renversement du gouvernement) ; 10 accusés furent condamnés à 5 ans de prison et un à 3 ans. Dennis perdit en appel en 1951
