This work is devoted to the development of silica monolithic stationary phases based on solgel process for miniaturized gas chromatography (GC) separation techniques. The bibliographic section described different stationary phases used in GC chips on one hand and the state of the art on the use of silica monoliths in separation science in the other hand. After showing the inadequacy of stationary phases already described in the literature for the separation of light hydrocarbons, we naturally oriented our work to monolithic stationary phases, synthesized in-situ in columns and having a large surface area to retain very light compounds. At first, the monoliths were developed in the form of a bar to allow the physicochemical characterization to better understand the phenomena governing the sol-gel process. Many protocol enhancements have been made for the synthesis of these in-situ monoliths in capillary tubes to meet the constraints of miniaturized separation techniques. The protocol has been further adapted to be implemented successfully in chromatographic chips with a quite different geometry. The chromatographic properties of the original phases proved ideally suited to the purpose and can be utilized for fast linear and branched hydrocarbon separation.
