Note publique d'information : Ce mémoire présente l’étude et la conservation-restauration d’un drapeau en coton
composté, réalisé en 2006 par l’artiste américaine Claire Pentecost, sous le titre
de Proposal for a New American Agriculture. Il est conservé au Frac Lorraine à Metz,
institution connue pour ses collections immatérielles, et paritaires. Cette œuvre
à l’apparence intrigante invite celui qui la regarde à se questionner sur les pratiques
agricoles occidentales. Elle propose un retour à une agriculture plus raisonnée, comme
avec l’emploi du compost, utilisée pour détruire l’icône américaine de la bannière
étoilée et y créer une vaste lacune en son centre. Le sujet technico-scientifique
s’intéresse à l’application d’un protocole de corrélation d’images pour l’observation
des déformations des textiles en suspension. Deux systèmes d’accrochage aimantés ont
été comparés grâce à cette technique, ceci permettant de proposer au Frac Lorraine
un nouveau système d’exposition. Ainsi, les interventions de conservation-restauration
menées sur l’objet s’adaptent à une déontologie nouvelle, qu’imposent les particularités
des collections d’art contemporain. Une synthèse des différentes recherches menées
ces dernières décennies à ce propos introduit les propositions de traitements. Ce
résumé éclaire une nouvelle manière d’appréhender la conservation des œuvres récentes.
Note publique d'information : This thesis presents the study and conservation-restoration of a composted cotton
flag, made in 2006 by the American artist Claire Pentecost, under the title Proposal
for a New American Agriculture. It is conserved at the Frac Lorraine in Metz, an institution
known for its intangible and parity collections. This apparently intriguing work invites
the viewer to question Western agricultural practices. It proposes a return to a more
reasoned agriculture, as with the use of compost, used to destroy the American icon
of the Star-Spangled Banner and create a vast gap in its middle. The technical-scientific
subject is interested in the application of an digital image correlation (DIC) protocol
for the observation of the deformations of suspended textiles. Two magnetized hanging
systems were compared using this technique, enabling the Frac Lorraine to propose
a new exhibition system. In this way, the conservation-restoration interventions carried
out on the object are adapted to a new deontology, which is imposed by the particularities
of contemporary art collections. A synthesis of the different research carried out
in recent decades on this thema introduces the treatment proposals. This summary sheds
light on a new way of understanding the conservation of recent works.
