Note publique d'information : This thesis is dedicated to the study and the conservation process of a Chinese handscroll,
Remontée du fleuve lors du festival Qingming, kept in the Guimet Museum, in Paris.
This painting is made with ink and light colours on silk, lined with paper and embellished
with decorative silks. It is part of a bigger corpus of reproductions of a famous
painting made by Zhang Zeduan in the 12th century, « Along the River During the
Qingming Festival » and kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing. It may have been bought
by Emile Guimet during his unique trip to Asia dedicated to the study of Japanese,
Chinese and Indian religions, along with the other acquisitions he made in
order to constitute the collection of his future museum in France. The issues linked
with the rolling of scroll paintings and its resulting alterations lead us to choose
this subject of study. The cracks and folds parallel to the rolling axis have structurally
altered the scroll. The length of this artwork and its overall alterations led to
a more global reflection on the way to process the conservation treatments. The scientific
study focused on the optimization of a processing chain of treatments for the flattening
and structural stabilisation of the scroll and allowed us to study the potential
of 3D imagery in this procedure. The operating chain of treatments then allowed
to reduce the fold and distortion of the scroll and to restore its functional abilities.
Finally, the inpainting of the stabilized alterations allowed to give back its legibility
to the painting.
