Note publique d'information : This doctoral dissertation elaborates a model in which information systems (IS) have
an impact on the internationalisation of SMEs through four factors : Firstly, through
a boost of productivity/a lowering of the firms' internal costs, secondly through
better possibilities to diversify the offer, thirdly through a lowering of the transaction
costs at the interface firm-customer and last but not least through a support of the
strategic decision concerning the internationalisation process. This model is tested
empirically by two points of view : The argumentation of the producers of IS and the
beliefs of the users. As to the argumentation of the producers, a content analysis
of an online market where 1549 software tools are listed bas been conducted. In general,
the software editors argue rather in a global way concerning the impact of their tool
on a specific internationalisation factor. An exception is the relation between CRM
systems and transaction costs in the context of SMEs. Concerning the beliefs of the
users, an internet survey with 260 users of German SMEs bas been realised. This survey
showed that : IS have a significant impact on the internationalisation of SMEs ; it
is rather a catalyst where all internationalisation factors are supported ; the experience
of using IS and internationalisation experience are important factors to consider
; the utility of IS for i internationalisation seems to follow the economic principle
of diminishing returns to scale ; the structure of the impacts of IS on internationalisation
doesn't differ between small and bigger SMEs ; IS have rather to be considered as
a global system ; it is possible to identify several clusters of companies concerning
their level of internationalisation and their behaviour of using IS.
