décembre 1958 à Londres, Angleterre. Diplômé de Glasgow et de Cambridge. Il se rendit
à l'Observatoire royal de Greenwich mais sa carrière y fut interrompue par la Première
Guerre mondiale. Il fut alors nommé HM Astronomer à l'Université de Cape Town.
